Farm Credit Bank of Texas Names Betty Flores to Board of Directors

AUSTIN, Texas – Members of the Farm Credit Bank of Texas (FCBT) Board of Directors have named Elizabeth G. “Betty” Flores to serve as a director on the bank’s board. Her three-year term began Aug. 1. As a board-appointed director, she will help oversee and establish policy for the bank, which has combined assets of $14.6 billion.

From 1998 until June of 2006, Flores served as mayor of Laredo, Texas. Her strong leadership, conservative management and enthusiastic promotion of her city and its people helped Laredo become one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. At the same time, Laredo achieved the highest financial ratings in the city’s 227-year history and record-low unemployment. Prior to serving as Laredo’s first female mayor, Flores worked for 28 years at Union National Bank and Laredo National Bank, rising from secretary all the way to senior vice president — the first woman in Laredo National Bank’s history to hold that position.

“Betty brings a tremendous wealth of experience, energy and commitment to our board,” said FCBT Board Chairman Buddy Cortese. “We are confident that she will bring the same value and impact to our stockholders that she has brought to the city of Laredo.”

Throughout her career, Flores has been a strong advocate for community reinvestment and affordable housing. Even with her demanding career and active family life, she has found time to devote to literacy projects such as Hooked-on-Books, At-Risk Children, Youth 2000 and Special Olympics.

Flores fills a newly created position on the seven-member FCBT board, and is one of two director-appointed members. The other board members are Chairman Ralph “Buddy” Cortese of Fort Sumner, N.M.; Vice Chairman Jon “Mike” Garnett of Spearman, Texas; Kenneth Andrews of Madisonville, Texas; Joe Crawford of Baileyton, Ala.; Jimmy Dodson of Robstown, Texas; and Dr. William Staats of Baton Rouge, La., who is also a board-appointed director.

Farm Credit provides loans and financial services to agricultural producers, agribusinesses, and rural landowners and homeowners.  The Farm Credit Bank of Texas is the wholesale lender to the largest network of rural financing cooperatives across Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Texas.
