Farm Credit Board Re-Elects Leaders
 

AUSTIN, Texas – The board of directors of the Austin-based Farm Credit Bank of Texas (FCBT) re-elected Ralph "Buddy" Cortese chairman of the board and Jon "Mike" Garnett vice chairman on Jan. 4. Both men were recently re-elected to the board of the financing cooperative by Tenth Farm Credit District stockholders.

Cortese was first elected to the seven-member bank board in 1995 and has served as its chairman since 2000. He is a former board chairman of the Production Credit Association (PCA) of Eastern New Mexico and a former member of the Tenth Farm Credit District PCA Stockholders' Advisory Committee. Cortese farms and ranches near Fort Sumner, N.M.

Garnett was elected vice chairman of the board in 2000. He joined the bank board in 1999, after serving as a director of Panhandle-Plains Federal Land Bank Association for 23 years. He has represented the Tenth Farm Credit District on The Farm Credit Council Board of Directors since 2003. He was appointed to the USDA Texas State Technical Committee the same year. Garnett farms grain and forage crops and feeds stocker cattle near Spearman, Texas.

Other members of the FCBT Board of Directors include Kenneth Andrews of Madisonville, Texas; Joe R. Crawford of Baileyton, Ala.; Jimmy Dodson of Robstown, Texas; Elizabeth G. “Betty” Flores of Laredo; and William F. Staats of Baton Rouge, La.

The Farm Credit Bank of Texas is the source of funds for 20 local lending cooperatives in the Tenth Farm Credit District, which includes Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Texas. The $13.7 billion bank is part of the nationwide Farm Credit System, the nation's single largest source of loans for agriculture, agribusiness, rural real estate and country homes.
