House Ag Committee to Consider Farm Credit Amendments Beginning July 17

The U.S. House Agriculture Committee has rescheduled to begin its work on the 2007 Farm Bill for July 17. The bill includes a credit title that impacts Farm Credit.

As a part of the 2007 farm bill debate, the committee is considering modest and incremental adjustments to the Farm Credit System’s current lending authority. The changes would provide greater flexibility and more competitive financial resources for farm-related businesses and rural homeowners, allowing Farm Credit institutions to better meet the needs of U.S. agriculture and rural America for years to come.

Farm Credit institutions currently offer a range of financial solutions for all types of agricultural producers, but the businesses that producers rely on and the rural infrastructure that supports them is often ineligible for Farm Credit financing. Updating Farm Credit authorities will help agricultural producers better compete in world markets and will help maintain and improve the quality of life in rural America.

These recommendations emerged from a 2005-06 Farm Credit System planning initiative, the HORIZONS Project. Customers of Farm Credit associations can play an important role in this important process by contacting their members of Congress and asking them to support Farm Credit’s legislative proposals as part of the 2007 Farm Bill.
